When it comes to sports, I am always too lazy. There’s no hope—it’s just a total loss. I understand I need to exercise and that it’s important for my body and mind, whether I’m doing so to improve my health or maintain my figure. I know that physical activity aids in the production of serotonin, a hormone that plays a significant role in creating a feeling of happiness. At least that’s what everyone says.

These are all good reasons for wanting to be active—and I’ve always wanted to, or to be honest, I’ve always felt guilty for not doing it. I don’t care for sports. I’m a princess. I detest sweating, being out of breath, carrying a duffle bag, the smell of the gym, and physical exertion in itself. I don’t want to exercise—I just want the perks of doing so. I bought badminton rackets but stored them away in my closet. I bought brand-new running shoes, five years ago, but never wore them. I paid for a one-year membership at the local gym, but never actually went. On my living room shelf, aerobics videos are gathering dust.

I have to get up. I have to get active.

“Maybe tomorrow,” is my favourite response.

Each day that passes, I break my promise and the guilt builds up. But what if I tricked my body into thinking I’m being active? Maybe I could give my body something just as good as physical activity. My favourite is a fruit and yogurt smoothie: it’s rich in vitamins, healthful, and makes me feel good about myself. In the end, in my mind isn’t that just what I’d get out of being active?

Number of servings: 1 large glass

Preparation time: 2 minutes

  • 1 cup (250 ml) frozen berries (I chose a mix of blackberries, raspberries, blueberries and strawberries.)
  • ½ cup (125 ml) Activia sweetened plain yogurt
  • 1 tbsp. (15 ml) liquid honey
  • Optional orange juice

PREPARATION

  1. Place the frozen berries, Activia sweetened plain yogurt and honey in a blender.
  2. Pour the orange juice in the blender and blend the ingredients until the mix reaches a smooth consistency. Add orange juice as needed for a more liquid mix.
  3.  Enjoy!
