Greek Pleasures
December 6, 2011“The icing on top”: That popular expression that refers to the little extra, the finishing touch, the ultimate detail.
If you think negatively, it’s the final straw. The icing can represent the letter you get when you’ve been laid off. The TV that breaks on your sick day. The empty milk carton, which you discover just after making your much-needed morning coffee.
However, if you think positively, it’s the little detail that makes perfection what it is. The icing can be the rainbow that appears after our first kiss. The charming server at the bistro who refolds our napkin when we go to the bathroom. The great little restaurant we discover after a great day in a foreign country.
However, given the season, I’d happily replace the expression “icing on the cake” with “yogurt on the roast.” Because even if a dish is already great on its own, a dollop of yogurt with parsley on top makes it that much better.
I mixed Oikos plain Greek yogurt with finely chopped Italian parsley. That’s it. A great topping for a delicious roast with candied tomatoes and red wine.
