As the holiday season approaches and the “To Do” list grows don’t get stressed out by holiday decorating. This is a time of year when staying centered is important to maintaining a healthy routine and staying on track for heart health. Having a joyful, inviting home can be very grounding so here are some stress-free tips for getting festive.
Make a Plan
We often end up at a mall at the last minute, rushing around, buying random packs of ribbon and pinecones, not sure what we’ll use them for. Look at what you have at home—you may have hundreds of votive candles and snowmen napkins packed in a storage bin. Now make a list and shop earlier in the season when stores are not as packed.
Keep it Simple
Do a few things, and do them well. A beautiful wreath on the door to greet visitors as they arrive, stockings on the mantle, ivy hanging from a chandelier and a pretty area to display your Christmas cards might be just enough.
Keep it Easy
Not everything has to be home made. If you love crafts, block off a Sunday afternoon and enjoy the time to create from scratch. Otherwise you can buy nice ornaments, candle holders and even greenery at places like the Dollar store. A can of silver spray paint can transform a pine branch (real or artificial) into a lovely centerpiece just by adding a bow and a pillar candle. Wrap greenery around the banister and accent with artificial berries for an instant holiday feel. Since you have to wrap presents anyway, spread a few small ones throughout the house (on side tables, etc.) to accent each room.
Involve the Kids
Paper snowflakes. Kids love to make them and they can be turned into simple, elegant decorations. String them on a gold piece of yarn and hang them in the foyer to greet guests when they enter.
Connect with the Family
Sharing special times with your loved ones is the most important part of the holidays. Meet at the local farmers market to buy hand-made ornaments. Stock up on cider that will permeate the house with spicy warmth after a day spent sledding. A family trip to hunt for the perfect Christmas tree will result in the ultimate gathering place for all those that are close to you.
