So you’ve had enough of the grey winter weather and decided to escape to a sunny, all-inclusive resort? Great idea!

You can soak up the warm rays and relax since, on an all-inclusive vacation, all the chores and cooking will be taken care of. In order to avoid digestive problems, big or small, and to reduce the risk of overeating and overdrinking, here are a few tips to help you make good choices during your next vacation.

Meals: When possible, pick a restaurant with an à la carte menu. All-you-can-eat buffets are more “dangerous,” because they encourage overeating. Eating at regular times will also help you moderate your eating habits. Snacks should only be consumed when you are hungry. Try to resist the temptation to eat all the time.

Food: Start your meals with vegetables in order to fill up before the main course. If you’re only eating one plate, fill half of it with vegetables and the other half with an exotic fish- or legume-based dish. For breakfast, choose fresh fruit, dairy and whole grain products.

Preventing food poisoning: Always drink bottled water and avoid ice cubes. Choose fruit that needs to be peeled like bananas or mangos and avoid melons. Cooked vegetables are a better choice than crudités or salad. Do not consume raw or undercooked meat, poultry, fish, seafood or eggs. Drink high-temperature pasteurized milk, and avoid food and drink from street hawkers. Most importantly, remember to always wash your hands before eating.

Alcohol: Moderation is always in good taste. All-you-can-drink alcohol can be very tempting when you’re at an all-inclusive resort. Get into the habit of drinking at least two to three glasses of water between each alcoholic drink. Don’t forget that you’ll be in the sun for the better part of the day, so it’s very important to keep yourself hydrated… with something other than alcohol!

You’ve overdone it a bit or want to aid your digestion? Physical activity will help you kill two birds with one stone; you’ll use energy and stimulate digestion. Try long walks on the beach, play volleyball with friends or do some free diving. You’ll be spoilt for choice if you want to get active on vacation!
